Cornell University announced a big step from electronics to photonics by modulating a beam of light with electricity Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

General NewsMuch of our electronics could soon be replaced by photonics, in which beams of light flitting through microscopic channels on a silicon chip replace electrons in wires.

Photonic chips would carry more data, use less power and work smoothly with fiber-optic communications systems.
The trick is to get electronics and photonics to talk to each other.

Now Cornell University researchers have taken a major step forward in bridging this communication gap by developing a silicon device that allows an electrical signal to modulate a beam of light on a micrometer scale.

General News

BMW technology has come a long way. Now, together with politicians and the energy industry, we must turn our vision of sustained mobility into reality," says Professor Burkhard Goschel, Board Member of the BMW Group.

The records were set at the high-speed Miramas Proving Grounds in France in September 2004.
With these records, the BMW Group has shown that hydrogen is able to replace conventional fuel without requiring the driver to make the slightest compromise in terms of dynamic performance.

The single-seater H2R Record Car uses a 6.0-litre 12 cylinder power unit producing in excess of 210 kW, that races to 100 km/h in just six seconds and has a top speed of 302.4 km/h.

General NewsThe world's smallest globe with a resolution 100 times higher than previously possible

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation has created an electron beam (EB) lithography (*1) system that enables the fabrication of extremely small three-dimensional (3D) structures with sizes measured in nanometers (A nanometer is a billionth of a meter).

NTT demonstrated the 3D nanopatterning and nanofabrication by exposing a small sphere to the EB to form the world's smallest globe.

This highly advanced technique promises to become the technological foundation of nanotechnology (*2), which is expected to give rise to many new industries and new markets.
