EntertainmentHOLLYWOOD studios will cross a significant technological and psychological frontier this week when they offer the first downloadable movies that can be legally burned to a DVD.

Four major studios struck a deal with online movie service CinemaNow to offer more than 100 mainstream titles that can be burned to a disc and played on almost any DVD player and television set. Prices start at about $US9 ($A12).

The deal was hailed as a milestone in internet distribution, giving movie fans what they have long demanded: the convenience of playing what they download on the living room TV.

EntertainmentAccording to a new study from Research and Markets, the number of subscribers receiving broadband-delivered TV services will rise from 1.9 million in 2004 to 25.3 million in 2008.

Subscription revenues are projected to soar from $635 million last year to $7.2 billion in 2008.

The IPTV Global Forecast: 2005-2008 report looks at the developments in IPTV platforms worldwide, including plans by SBC and BellSouth to deploy large IP TV networks in the U.S., and Verizon's strategy to use IP TV technology to deliver VOD over its FTTP access network.

In addition, China Telecom is looking to introduce broadband-delivered VOD, and continued growth is expected for PCCW's Now Broadband TV in Hong Kong and FastWeb in Italy.

EntertainmentDIRECTV Group, Inc. and Boeing announced the arrival of the Spaceway F1 satellite at the Sea Launch home port in Long Beach, Calif., where it will undergo final preparations for a late April launch aboard a Zenit-3SL vehicle.

Spaceway F1 is one of four Boeing-built Ka-band satellites DIRECTV has scheduled for launch over the next three years as part of a historic expansion of programming capacity.

The expansion will enable DIRECTV to deliver more than 1,500 local and national high definition channels and other advanced programming services to consumers nationwide by 2007.

The Boeing 702 spacecraft was manufactured by Boeing's Satellite Development Center at the company's one-million-square-feet satellite manufacturing, integration and test complex in El Segundo, Calif.

EntertainmentToshiba Corporation disclosed today that the company has received separate commitments of support from Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros. Studios, respectively for the next-generation, high-definition DVD disc format, HD DVD.

HD DVD is the newly developed high definition DVD disc standard being developed at the DVD Forum, which represents over 230 consumer electronics, information technology, and content companies.

HD DVD innovations include higher resolution video and audio available on a suite of disc capacities adaptable for longer or shorter programs – along with advanced navigation, web connectivity, and new consumer options.

EntertainmentScientists at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and Carnegie Mellon University can deliver HDTV-quality stereo viewing at reasonable cost.

If you’re a baby boomer, you may remember watching horror movies with “3D glasses.” This novelty approach to creating a visual sensation of depth was one of the first movie forays into stereo viewing. Since then, with stereo goggles for computer gaming and — at the high-end of quality and expense — with supercomputing applications in science and engineering, the technology has improved.

But you still can’t go to the movies and see good 3D, say visualization experts at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), who have come up with an approach that may fill the void in theaters, meeting rooms and at home.
